Nigeria’s economy relies heavily on crude oil while neglecting many other viable sectors of the economy that can generate income for the nation. The government has made many efforts to diversify the economy and do away with the over-reliance on crude oil. It is along this line of thought that we are prime to key into the diversification agenda.
The big challenge is developing sustainable community-based strategies that can explore other non-oil-based sectors of the economy. The agricultural industry is one of such viable sectors. The fertility of our lands in Nigeria and Africa means we can feed the world. Still, the reality is that many of our citizens cannot get food to eat. We are faced with the paradox of living in hunger amid plenty.
Our response to this mind-boggling challenge is to set up an agricultural empowerment scheme from which community members can access startup funds, networking and free agricultural training in Fishery, Pig farming, Cassava and other cash crop cultivations in Ogun state, Osun State. Our desire is that this empowerment scheme will be sustainable and encourage many young people to toll the line of agriculture. This scheme has touched a few communities in two states in Nigeria, but many more communities benefit from this initiative with “SMOL Foundation’’ efforts from home and abroad.
