Clean Water for rural communities

At a glance…

About 829,000 people are estimated to die yearly as a result of drinking contaminated water.  This statistic is troubling, no one should die because of water which the UN has recognized as a fundamental human right, but the sad truth is that most rural communities do not have access to clean water and are thus at the risk of contracting a variety of avoidable diseases from drinking bad water. This is a global problem affecting primarily rural communities.

Challenge

The big question is, “What role can we play to improve the quality of water consumed by people in rural communities?” The number of communities in Nigeria and Africa that suffer from inadequate water and water-related problems is too numerous to count.  There is the daunting task of figuring out where to even begin. Most rural communities access water from streams and other water bodies, which are contaminated by the aftermath of open defecation and other indiscriminate waste disposals.

Solution

At SMOL foundation, our firm belief is that all that is required is “smol” efforts from individuals both at home and worldwide to raise funds to make available clean and healthy water for rural people in different communities across Africa. Raising funds to provide sources of accessing clean water is one of the solutions. Still, we have taken it a step further by deploying a communication intervention to change the people’s mindset, attitudes and behaviours that have led to contamination of their water bodies.  We do this with the help of our partners and volunteers worldwide by travelling to affected places and facilitating workshops, and implementing and executing sustainable water projects in affected communities.
